Musical Instruments for Kids: 6 of The Best

By Ruth Williams

It is well documented that encouraging a child's creativity has numerous benefits to their development. However, it can be a difficult task to get them to take up a musical instrument when there is the TV and computer games to contend with. However, if your little ones do get bitten by the music bug, what are the most suitable instruments for them to pick up and play?

Normally, children will be introduced to music at school and the opportunity may arise for them to take up a musical instrument. Here, we look at six of the best musical instruments for children of all ages:

1. The Violin

The violin is a classic and most children will be given the chance to play this string instrument during their early school days. The beauty of the violin is that it comes in many different sizes so is perfect for a range of age groups. As well as being available in a range of sizes they are also easy for the child to carry around.

2. Drums and Percussion Instruments

There is a great variety of drums and percussion instruments available, so a large drum kit isn't necessarily the only option. Children love playing the drums so this is a sure way to get them interested in music. If you don't have the room for a full kit, you can buy individual and hand-held drums. This will also make them a cheaper purchase.

3. The Piano

Learning to play the piano provides a great musical foundation for children. The beauty of this instrument is that it can be played on its own or as part of a group. If you don't have the funds or space for a piano there is an alternative. A good quality keyboard will work as well. This is recommended until you know your child is intent on keeping up with the commitment of playing.

4. Guitar

The guitar, both acoustic and electric, has been used by many pop stars which has led to an increase in people wanting to learn to play it. The guitar is not the easiest instrument to grasp and will require a great deal of commitment to master. If your child wants to learn to play the guitar, it is best to start it off with a small acoustic version.

5. Flute

In schools, the flute is also a popular musical instrument for children to learn to play. This instrument is small and easy to care for and carry around. Getting the hang of the technique will take some commitment, as with the guitar. This aside, the flute is a good choice for children wanting to learn to play a musical instrument.

6. Learn the Trumpet

With a strong, distinctive sound this member of the brass family is the perfect choice for kids who like to make an entrance. Your child will be able to identify the trumpet in a whole host of modern songs, which only makes it more popular. This instrument is ideally suited to slightly older children as a certain amount of force is required to hold a note.

It is well worth spending time encouraging your child to participate in musical activities as it is very beneficial to their development. They learn to be responsible, committed, determined, and creative. They will also grow in confidence and gain self-esteem. So what are you waiting for?
