What Assateague Horses Are About

By Laura Gallagher

Taking pictures of the equines is something many people love. Finesse, good form, and grace are exuded by these animals. Their colors, sizes, and breeds can also vary. Some wild versions of them still exist, despite being generally domesticated, serene, and tame. Among them are the Assateague horses. The Assateague Island is the home of these equines. It is a large barrier island between the states of Virginia and Maryland. Photographers favor these wild equines as subjects. Learn then some information about them.

These equines are considered feral. It means they were once domesticated animals that turned wild. These animals can survive with poor food quality, harsh weather conditions, and pest infestations. They have learned to survive in a natural setting. They do not need humans to feed them and care for them. They can get sick when eating human food. Some can meet accidents too because of going to roads to look for food.

It is not certain on where these animals originate. Equines coming from a Spanish galleon that have sunk is pointed by some folk tales. Evidence is not present, so this is not proven at this point. Animals who have crossed from the state mainlands may also be their ancestors.

Various tourists could flock and see such equines. There are two refuges or national parks which cares for such animals. They are called sometimes as Chincoteague ponies. Such animals usually go in herds. It would be nice to find them in the natural habitats and observe their wild practices. For this reasons, photographers adore them.

Distance should be still kept if taking their photographs is desired. It may be tempting to photograph them closely, but space must really be provided. People can get knocked down, bitten, or kicked by them.

Such animals must be really preserved. Luring them with food should not be done. Their treatment should not be the same with the domesticated equines.

Nature lovers, nature photographers, and horse lovers would really be amazed with assateague horses. These graceful, tough, and wild equines can really be interesting to look at.
