Removable Ink Tattoos

By Kenneth Orr

Historically, tattoos have been painful to get and even more painful to remove. Laser treatments to remove tattoos have made the process safer than some of the old methods, but still take several sessions for complete removal.

A new development in tattoo ink could help solve this problem. It's called removable ink, and while it is permanent while in the skin, one laser treatment is generally enough to completely remove it.

This new ink was developed by a company called Freedom-2, LLC and is based on research by scientists at Harvard Medical School and Duke University. It comes packaged in tiny polymer microspheres that remain intact while the ink is in the skin, but explode when hit with a laser.

The biodegradable ink is able to then dissolve into the body. It will disappear and leave no signs or traces or the tattoo. It might even be safer than the conventional inks that might contain toxic substances and metals. Such toxins would include cobalt and iron.

There are many reports stating that this removable ink is much safer because it is soluble. Even though this might not be want you want to hear when you think of ink for tattoos, because it is encapsulated it will remain permanent until the laser busts the capsule.

Since the ink is encapsulated, it is thought to be more stable over the years. Therefore, it should not migrate or fade like the old conventional inks may. Since it was just released in 2007, there is only black ink available.

The company Freedom-2 is currently working on developing more removable inks that will come in a full range of colors. All of the removable inks will most likely be a little more expensive than the conventional ink.

Why might you want to use removable ink instead of the conventional ink? the most obvious reason is that you might want to remove the tattoo later in life. About one in four American adults will have at least one tattoo and about 17% of them have reported that they have considered having them removed.

With the removable ink, it will be a lot less expensive and less painful to remove the tattoo. Beyond the convenience of the removal, there are safety claims that are important if they can be substantiated.

When consulting with your tattoo artist on your next tattoo, it might be useful to inquire about removable ink. Remember that at this time, only black ink is available, but more colors should be available soon. Your tattoo price may be a bit higher, but you'll have the option of removing your tattoo much more easily than in the past.
