Establishing Libraries For Post Production Music

By Chloe Gib

While there are multiple uses for post production music and sound effects, most often the term relates to the film industry. So, generally when one refers to any aspect of audio processing, it relates to cinema, television, commercials and other programming. As a result, it is also referred to as audio post production at many studios.

However, there are a number of different elements involved in the process. One such element is that of Automatic Dialogue Replacement (ADR). ADR is a process in which a studio calls in an actor or actors to fill in, or, replace any weak dialogue after filming is complete.

In addition, other elements include voice-overs, music and Foley work, all of which are also added during this phase. So, regardless of the project, most often these elements are added shortly before completion. Of course, as with all recordings, there are often additional editing requirements before distributing a final release.

Voice-overs are often used during animated programming. Whereas, music is often now a part of a number of regular TV shows. When it comes to Foley artists, these are the individuals who specialize in creating various sound effects for a recording. Of course, just as there are crews setting up stage and screen, there are also crews which do take down as part of the post production process.

After which, a studio may determine that it is better to use automated services rather than that of an individual. So, to assure job security for oneself and other engineers, it is often best to follow these instructions. Of course, there may be times when an individual may want to inquire about a particular incident or make suggestions related to a project.

Of course, there are also other areas of the entertainment industry in which the process has a different meaning. For example, at live concerts in which the bands now record the show as its happening. For, generally this requires a great deal of processing at a merchandising booth before these shows can be sold. Of course, in order to sell these live shows at the end of the night, there are generally multiple individuals working to assure the sound is of quality standards before releasing these on the spot show recordings to consumers.

To this end, the importance of post production music in film and television is often overlooked. However, television, cinema and sound would all most likely be far less enjoyable without the addition of dialogue and sound effects by actors and Foley artists. Although, with the advancement of technology, it is now possible to create sound and video on a computer, which has already saved studios a great deal of money.
