Some Books That Can Be Considered As The Best Fantasy Books Of All Time

By Juliette Cruz

The 1930s saw a spurt of interest in fantasy writers from readers. Many of these readers have become ardent followers of these fantasy writers. In honor of the genre, here is a list of the possibly best fantasy books of all time that one should best read.

J. R. R. Tolkien started the whole ball rolling when he wrote The Hobbit. In this book, the writer brought forth his imagination that have basically defined what is the structure and element of the fantasy genre to this day. Without this book, we would have no idea about elves, orcs, goblins, trolls and many other creatures that have been copied and pasted into many other fantasy stories we see today.

Of course the next two books of Tolkien which is comprised of The Two Towers and the Return of the King, which together with the first comprise the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Altogether these are probably the best of all as it has spawned massive followings, a movie franchise, board and video games, as well as influencing a following of people who know how to speak Elvish and Orcish as well as regular cosplay events dedicated to these stories and their creators and writers.

Tolkien began something not known in the world of literature before in that he was probably one of the first authors to have sequels in his novels. This is something that David Eddings has done in his novels comprising The Belgariad and The Mallorean.

The Dungeons and Dragons game craze was very much influenced by the printing of the Belgariad, which started with the Pawn of Prophecy. With its heavy reliance on maps for the story and also the appearance of intertwined multiple characters and character classes, it became a favorite reference for would be game designers and also dungeon masters in the game.

And of course one cannot forget or just do away with the C. S. Lewis 1930s classics that target the very young in terms of appeal and story. The Narnia series, a compendium of seven books starting with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ending with the Last Battle, is an all time classic and much loved by Christian writers and fans.

Younger audiences have been the mainstay of the Narnia series due to their having unforgettable characters. Not are only the characters based on myth and legend, but also include the characters of the everyday. There are talking animals and even animated inanimate objects within the whole story. Most households have this story in their possession, especially if they have children that love to read, or parents who want their children to start to read.

The ones by the three authors above easily qualify to be the best fantasy books of all time. This is due to their timeless appeal and the way they can cut through age barriers for the fantasy reader or enthusiast. Not many stories can match the distinction of having an appeal that goes beyond one generation or one time era only. Imagine a book that is enjoyed and giving the same kind of entertainment in 1930 having the same effect on a reader in 2012, not many can match that power.
